When should I schedule my child’s first dental appointment?
- Dr Walters will want to see your baby when his or her first tooth comes in
What can I do to prepare my child for their first dental visit?
- Talk in a positive exciting way about what to expect at the dentist office
- Practice with your child. Nothing will calm their nerves or excite them more than practicing with mom or dad. Practice opening wide, sitting still, brushing and flossing.
What will happen during the first appointment?
- Dr Walters wants your child’s first appointment to be a positive happy one, so what happens during this appointment will depend on your child's age . We use the tell show do technique which involves telling the child what will be done, showing it to them( on a hand for example) and then actually performing the treatment. Your child will get to ride up and down in the chair, look at the water and suction along with the polisher (the tooth tickler). At the end of the appointment they will receive a goodie bag and get a trip to the toy pot.
How often should my child visit the dentist?
- Every six months.
What can I do as a parent to keep my child’s teeth healthy?
- Take care of your own teeth! Cavities and gum disease are caused by bacteria so they are contagious. Also brushing and flossing your own teeth in front of your child sets a good example.
- Until age 6 parents need to brush for the child. Then they get a turn to brush.
- Monitor your child’s diet. Foods that are sticky (raisins) drinks you sip on (milk in a bottle or sippy cup) foods you snack on (chips or cheerios) stay on the teeth a long time and are more likely to cause cavities.
